Remote access to cingulate using NX

  1. We recommend the use of NX over VNC as the performance is much better
  2. Windows Client:
    1. Download from: http://www.nomachine.com/download-client-windows.php
  3. Mac OS X Client:
    1. Download from: http://www.nomachine.com/download-client-macosx.php
  4. Linux Client:
    1. Download from: http://www.nomachine.com/download-client-linux.php
  5. Running the NX client
    1. You will probably need your administrator to install the client. If not, install the appropriate package from above and launch the NX client.
    2. On first launch we will be presented with a configuration wizard. Click "Next" to begin:
      1. The session can be named whatever you want, ideally soma. The host is "www.neuroimaging.org.au". Leave the other configurations (port and net type) as default and click "Next".
      2. The UNIX desktop can be chosen or left as default (which is KDE), but we recommend using Gnome for interface familiarity and speed. The recommended "size of remote desktop" is 1024x768. Click "Next".
        • NOTE: If you choose to use KDE, the default font settings on Mac will not work correctly and require some reconfiguration. We recommend selecting Gnome as the desktop of choice.
      3. Click the "Show advanced configuration dialogue", then "Finish". You will be presented with a new dialogue, in the top-right-hand area of which you should see a button labelled "Key". Click this button, and clear the text contained within. Replace the text with the following, and then click "Save" and then "Ok".

    1. Simply enter your login details and click the "Login" button.
    2. Once the session has been established you should be presented with a Gnome desktop which you can use. When you are finished, you can close the window and after a moment a terminal will launch inside the desktop asking whether you would like to terminate or suspend the current session. You can have multiple sessions suspended in the background at the same time, the next time you log the client will provide you with a list of your suspended sessions if there are any.
    3. NOTE: If you get an error "the NX service is not available or the NX access was disabled on host cingulate" you will need to re-enter the key as per the step above.
